The Day/Night Cycle Timer Tool

The Day/Night Cycle Timer Tool shows if it is day or night in your Dota 2 game and how long until it flips. Start it at the horn and watch the sun and the moon cross the sky. Axe once waited for the night to sneak up on someone. Axe is not sneaky. They heard him anyway.

1. Press Start when the horn sounds (0:00), or type your game clock. The sky and the big countdown follow your game.
2. No game running? Drag the day/night bar to any minute and see if it is day or night then.
3. Try the four ability buttons to see how Dark Ascension, Eclipse, Solar Guardian and Supernova bend the sky. Turn on Sound for a chime or a voice 10 seconds before every switch.

Dota 2 day night cycle: how long are day and night?

A full day in Dota 2 takes 10 minutes: 5 minutes of day, then 5 minutes of night. The time before the horn is night. The first day starts at 0:00, the first night at 5:00, the second day at 10:00, and so on for the whole game. You hear a rooster when the day comes and a wolf's howl when the night comes.

• Check it in the game: the clock at the top shows a sun or a moon. Alt + click on the clock writes the time into the team chat, with how much day or night is left.
• Forced night is only a break: abilities like Night Stalker's Dark Ascension turn day into night for a few seconds, but the clock keeps running. When they end, the sky jumps back to the normal cycle.
• The same in every game: day and night always switch at the same game times, so you can plan around them.

When is night in Dota 2? Day and night times

Easy rule: night starts at every minute that ends in 5 (5:00, 15:00, 25:00 …), day starts at every full ten (0:00, 10:00, 20:00 …). The first hour:

At night most heroes see 800 instead of 1800, less than half as far. Enemies can walk much closer before you see them, so ganks work better at night and wards matter more. 7 heroes have different vision:

Night Stalker is the only hero who sees farther at night than by day. Slark sees the same 1800 day and night.

Night vision bonuses

• Moon Shard (4,000 gold): +400 night vision while you hold it, +200 for good if you consume it.
• Luna, Lunar Blessing: +225 night vision, so Luna sees 1025 at night.
• Lycan, Shapeshift: +1000 night vision while he is a wolf.
• Spirit Breaker, level 10 talent: +500 Night Vision.
• Dawnbreaker, Break of Dawn: up to +20% vision when the sun comes out, fading over the day. Day vision, not night vision, but worth knowing.

Dota 2 night heroes: who gets stronger at night

Some heroes have abilities that work better at night. These are the ones to fear when the moon comes out:

Night Stalker

• Hunter in the Night: +24% movement speed and +38 attack speed at night.
• Void: the slow lasts 1.25 s by day and 1.6 to 3.4 s at night (by level), and only at night it also mini-stuns.
• Crippling Fear: the silence aura lasts 3 s by day and 4.5 to 6 s at night.
• Midnight Feast: at night it can be used to destroy a non-ancient creep and restore health and mana.
• Dark Ascension: 30 seconds of night whenever he wants.
• Vision: 800 by day, 1800 at night.

Luna

• Lunar Blessing: the bonus damage for allies becomes global at night, and Luna gets +225 night vision.
• Eclipse: also turns day into night for 10 seconds.

Lycan

• Howl: at night the armor and attack damage reduction hits enemies all over the map.
• Shapeshift: +1000 night vision in wolf form.

Dawnbreaker the day hero

• Break of Dawn: when the sun comes out she gets up to +8% base damage and +20% vision, fading over the day. If she made the day herself, the bonus stays at full power.
• Solar Guardian: turns night into day for 6 seconds.

Abilities that turn day into night (and back)

Four abilities change the time of day for a few seconds. They do not stack, and they do not pause the clock:

Day wins: if both happen at once, the day from Solar Guardian and Supernova beats the night from Dark Ascension and Eclipse. So a Dawnbreaker can ruin a Night Stalker's night, for a few seconds at least.

Night Stalker eats the sun. Dawnbreaker brings it back. Axe just wants to know if it is time to fight. It is always time to fight.

Neutral creeps and Roshan at night

• Neutral creeps sleep at night. Every neutral creep except Roshan has an aggro range of 0 at night, so it does not attack you when you walk past. It wakes up when you damage it or target it with a single-target spell. You see floating Zs above sleeping creeps.
• Roshan changes his pit. He sits in the top pit during the day and in the bottom pit at night. From 15:00 he walks over at every switch. Abilities that change the time of day do not move him. The Roshan Timer tracks it for you.
• No night speed bonus. Units used to get extra movement speed at night. That bonus was removed, so only heroes like Night Stalker get faster at night.
