The Dota 2 Hours Played Calculator Tool
The Hours Played Calculator Tool counts how much of your life went into Dota 2. Paste your Steam profile link or Friend ID: the tool asks Steam for your play time and OpenDota for the time you spent in matches, and turns the result into numbers that hurt: the money you would have made at Burger King, the books you could have read, the languages you could speak. Private profile? Just type your hours. Axe typed his. Axe needed a minute.
- Type your Steam name (the one from your profile link), or paste the link, your Friend ID or SteamID64, and press “Count my hours”.
- Watch the counter: your total hours, your tier, and the time in matches OpenDota knows about.
- Read what it means: pick a job and an hourly wage, and see what else those hours could have been. Hit “Share my hours” and scare your friends.

How to check your Dota 2 hours
- In the tool: paste your profile link. Steam answers when your game details are public.
- In your Steam library: click Dota 2. The game page shows your play time.
- On your Steam profile: open your games list, every game shows its hours on record.

Dota 2 hours private? Here is why
Steam hides play time unless you allow it. The tool can only read what Steam shares publicly:
- In Steam, open your profile and click Edit Profile.
- Go to Privacy Settings and set Game details to Public.
- Make sure Always keep my total playtime private is not ticked.
The time in matches comes from OpenDota instead. It needs “Expose Public Match Data” in Dota 2. The Public Match Data Checker tells you if yours is on.

Steam hours vs time in matches
The tool can show you two numbers, and they are never the same:
Steam play timeEvery minute Dota 2 was open: menus, queue, watching games, the Arcade. The big number.
Time in matchesOnly the games themselves, summed up by OpenDota from the matches it knows. Always smaller, and missing games from before your match data was public.
The difference is the time you spent waiting. Queue, picking, reading patch notes. Axe calls it “sharpening the axe”.

FAQ: Axe answers questions
How do I see how many hours I have in Dota 2?
Open Dota 2 in your Steam library: the play time is on the game page. Or type your Steam name into the Hours Played Calculator Tool, it reads the hours from Steam for you.
Why can the tool not see my hours?
Steam only shares play time when your “Game details” are public and “Always keep my total playtime private” is off. Both are in Steam under Profile → Edit Profile → Privacy Settings. You can also just type your hours into the tool.
Do Steam hours count time in the menu?
Yes. Steam counts all the time Dota 2 is open: menus, queue, watching games. The time in matches from OpenDota only counts the games themselves, so it is always lower.
How many hours has it been since Dota 2 came out?

Does the tool save my Steam data?
No. It asks Steam and OpenDota when you click, shows the result and stores nothing. Only public data is used.
