The Dota 2 Hero Nickname Lookup Tool

The Hero Nickname Lookup Tool tells you who your team is talking about. Type any nickname, short name, old name or internal name, and a name tag shows the hero with every other name it goes by. The nicknames come straight from Valve: they are the words the in-game hero search understands. Axe asked his team who “SF” is. They said “your killer”. They were right.

1. Type a nickname like np, bm, wisp, Rylai or zuus, or tap one of the examples.
2. Read the name tag: the hero, all official nicknames, old names and the name in the game files (copy it with one click).
3. Watch out for doubles. Some nicknames mean more than one hero. Then you get a name tag for each.

16 heroes have no official nickname at all: Abaddon, Axe, Bane, Clinkz, Dazzle, Disruptor, Enigma, Huskar, Marci, Mars, Morphling, Muerta, Pugna, Rubick, Slark and Treant Protector. Their names are short enough already. Axe agrees.

Dota 2 nicknames that mean more than one hero

These short names are official nicknames of several heroes at once. If somebody pings “bm”, ask which one.

Internal hero names: what the game files call them

Inside the game every hero has a code name: npc_dota_hero_ plus a short name. You see it in the game files, in console output and in APIs like OpenDota. For most heroes it is just the hero name. These 13 are different, often an older name of the hero:
