How to change your name in Dota 2

Dota 2 has no name of its own: it shows your Steam profile name. So you change it on Steam.

  1. Open Steam and go to your profile (click your name at the top).
  2. Click Edit Profile.
  3. Type your new name into Profile Name and click Save.
  4. Start Dota 2 again if it was open. The new name shows up there too.

Steam profile names do not have to be unique, so nobody can “take” your name. Symbols and letters from other alphabets work as well.

Tips for a good Dota 2 name

  • Keep it short. The kill feed and the scoreboard have little room, and your team has to type it in chat.
  • Do not name yourself like a hero nickname. A player called “sf” or “bm” gets pinged for the wrong hero. The Hero Nickname Lookup shows which short names are taken by heroes.
  • Funny beats rude. Names that insult people get reported. A good pun gets a laugh, even from the enemy.
  • Supports: “Pos 5 Forever” is in the drum. Wear it with pride.
