Dota Plus: What You Get and Is It Worth It?

Dota Plus is Valve’s monthly subscription for Dota 2: hero levels, a built-in coach called the Plus Assistant, extra stats and more shards for cosmetics. It does not make your hero stronger. Whether it is worth it depends on what you play Dota for. Here is the price, everything you get, what stays free and our honest verdict. Axe bought Dota Plus to see his win rate. Then he cancelled it. For the same reason.

What Dota Plus costs

What you get with Dota Plus

Hero levels and challenges

Every hero levels up to 30, through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Master and Grandmaster. Hero-specific challenges refresh every two weeks and only count in a win. Each tier unlocks chat wheel lines for that hero.

Plus Assistant

The game describes it as a tool that “uses machine learning to suggest items and abilities.” It also suggests heroes in the draft and lane setups your teammates can see, shows stack and pull timers and when runes spawn, and suggests wards. You switch it on in the shop guide during a match.

Stats and analysis

Real-time comparative analysis, post-game analytics, a detailed death summary, win probability while spectating, and hero trends with talent pick and win rates.

Shards and extras

More shards each week and from seasonal quests, spent in the Shard Shop on sets, chat wheel sounds and more. Plus a free weekly Battle Cup entry, seasonal terrain, the Avoid Player list, guild creation, and watching friends’ games live without delay.

Axe reached Grandmaster on Axe. The badge is very shiny. The enemies were not impressed. Axe hit them anyway.

Is Dota Plus pay to win?

No stats, no items, no bonus damage. Your hero is exactly as strong as everybody else’s. What you pay for is information: item and ability suggestions, pick suggestions and timers. For a new player that is a real help, like a coach whispering in your ear. For an experienced player it says what they already know.

Is Dota Plus worth it?

Our take, not Valve’s:

  • Worth it if you are learning the game and like suggestions, you love grinding hero levels and badges, or you want shards for the Shard Shop. A few months are enough to try it.
  • Skip it if you only care about MMR, you already know your builds, or you mostly play modes that do not count: Ability Draft, bot matches and custom games give no hero XP, Turbo only half.

Want to check builds and timings without paying? Our Item Timing Calculator Tool shows when your items should be done, and the Hero Comparison Tool puts two heroes side by side. Free, no login.

Gift, pause and cancel Dota Plus

  • Gift: 1, 6 or 12 months as a one-time block from the gifting option on the purchase screen. Recurring subscriptions cannot be gifted.
  • Cancel: under Manage Subscription in Dota, or in your Steam account. Plus stays active until the end of the paid period, then stops. Steam gives no partial refunds for unused time.
  • Pause: when Plus ends, hero level and relic progress pauses but is kept, and Shard Shop sets stay yours. Extra months you buy push the end date out.
