Best Dota 2 Settings: Every Video and Game Option Explained
The best Dota 2 settings are the ones that give you a steady frame rate and show you what matters, nothing more. This guide goes through every video option, the rendering API and low-latency mode, then the game settings that actually win fights: auto attack, quickcast, teleports, camera and minimap. Axe set everything to “Ultra” once. The PC agreed for six minutes.
Before you start: two Windows traps
Dota 2 itself warns about two things that cost FPS before any setting does:
- Energy Saver: the game says an Energy Saver power mode “will result in a lower frame rate when playing Dota”. Switch Windows to a performance power mode while you play.
- Xbox Game DVR: background recording “has been reported to cause performance problems in games such as reduced or capped fps, crashing, or freezing.” Turn it off if you do not use it.

Every Dota 2 video option explained
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Display Mode | Exclusive Fullscreen, Desktop-friendly Fullscreen, Windowed or Borderless Window. Desktop-friendly fullscreen minimizes when you click away. |
| Game Screen Render Quality | Renders the game world at a lower resolution while the interface stays sharp. The biggest single FPS lever. |
| FidelityFX Super Resolution | In the game’s words: “High quality upscaling when game render screen quality is less than 100%.” Needs DirectX 11 or Vulkan and Anti-Aliasing. |
| Shadow Quality, Grass | How detailed shadows and grass are drawn. Both cost a lot and change nothing about the fight. |
| Ambient Occlusion, Specular, Atmospheric Fog | Soft shadows in corners, shiny reflections and fog. Pure looks. |
| Normal Maps, Ground Parallax | Surface depth on models and ground. Parallax only works with Normal Maps on. |
| Ambient Creatures, Cloth, Tree Wind, Animate Portrait | Critters on the map, moving cloth, swaying trees and the moving portrait. Small costs each, free FPS when off. |
| Compute Shaders | The game says they “improve performance under most configurations” (DirectX 11 and Vulkan only). Leave them on. |
Axe turned off Ambient Creatures. The little critters on the map are gone. Axe misses them. A little.
Rendering API, NVIDIA Reflex and max FPS
Rendering API: DirectX 11 or Vulkan
You pick it in the video settings, and the game shows which API is “in use” and which one is set “for next launch”. The tooltip is clear: changes only apply after a restart, and launch options like -dx11 or -vulkan lock the setting.
NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency / AMD Anti-Lag 2.0
Options: Disabled, Enabled, Enabled + Boost. Valve added Reflex in 2022 for GTX 900 series cards and newer because it “decreases click-to-display latency, particularly in situations where performance is limited by the GPU.” Enabled is our pick. Boost, says the game, “may draw more power to the GPU and slightly impact FPS” for even lower latency.
Maximum frames per second
Two fields: one for the game, one for the dashboard. Set the game to your monitor’s refresh rate or a bit above, and the dashboard low, there is nothing to see there at 240 FPS. Values outside the slider work with the launch option +fps_max.
Best Dota 2 game settings
These do not touch FPS, but they decide whether your hero does what you want:
| Setting | What it does | Axe's pick |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Attack | Never, Standard or Always. Standard attacks nearby enemies “unless you have just moved, denied a creep, or pressed the stop or hold key.” | Never or Standard |
| Summoned Unit Auto Attack | Same as Hero, Never, Standard or Always, for summons and illusions. | Same as Hero |
| Teleport Requires Hold/Cancel to Stop | Moving or casting won’t cancel a teleport in progress (TP scrolls, Boots of Travel, Twin Gates). | On |
| Unified Orders with CTRL | Holding CTRL sends the order to all units you control. | On |
| Auto Select Summoned Units | New summons join your selection group. | Your call |
| Right-Click Allies | To Follow, To Attack or To Deny. | To Deny |
| Quick Attack | The attack key attacks at the cursor position right away. | On |
| Smart Attack Move | Attack-move targets the enemy nearest to your cursor, not to your hero. | Try it |
| Display Network Information | “Display FPS, ping & packet-loss in-game.” | On |
Best Dota 2 camera and minimap settings
- Camera Speed and Camera Deceleration: faster is better once you are used to it (“larger number equates to a faster stop”).
- Camera Grip: hold the key and drag the world. Many players bind it to a mouse button. Edge Pan stays useful as a backup.
- Center Camera on Hero on Respawn: on, so you are not staring at the fountain looking for yourself.
- Enable Screen Shake: off if stuns shaking the camera bother you.
- Minimap: Icons can show the hero, an arrow in player or team colors, or the hero name. Map Position left or right, Minimap Size and Minimap Hero Size as big as you can stand. Bigger icons are easier to read at a glance.
Every one of these can also be set with console commands. Put the ones you like into an autoexec.cfg with the Autoexec.cfg Generator Tool, then a reinstall cannot take them away.
Dota 2 hotkeys and quickcast
- Quickcast: each ability key can be set to Cast (click to confirm), Quickcast (cast at the cursor right away) or Autocast. “Quickcast triggers on key press by default”; switch it to key release if you like to aim while holding the key.
- Direct Cast Bindings let you bind separate keys to cast, quickcast or autocast the same ability.
- Use Legacy Keys: Dota 1 hotkeys that change per hero. The game warns that quickcast does not work with legacy keys enabled.
- Templates: Arrow (Default), WASD, MMO, Legacy Keys, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and Smite. Pick the one your hands already know.
Our Hotkeys Tool shows the default and legacy keys for every hero.

FAQ
What are the best Dota 2 settings for FPS?
Lower Game Screen Render Quality a bit and turn on FidelityFX Super Resolution, set Shadow Quality and Grass low, turn off Ambient Occlusion, High Quality Water and the ambient effects, keep Compute Shaders on and cap the frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate.
Should I use DirectX 11 or Vulkan in Dota 2?
Both are supported. Pick one under Rendering API and test a few games; it takes effect at the next launch. Launch options like -dx11 or -vulkan lock the setting.
Should I turn on NVIDIA Reflex or AMD Anti-Lag in Dota 2?
Valve added Reflex for GTX 900 cards and newer because it lowers click-to-display latency, especially when the graphics card is the limit. Enabled is a good default; Enabled + Boost may draw more power and slightly lower FPS.
What is the best Auto Attack setting in Dota 2?
Standard is the default and attacks nearby targets unless you just moved, denied or pressed stop or hold. Many experienced players switch to Never so their hero never attacks a creep by accident.
Should I use Quickcast in Dota 2?
Quickcast casts the ability at your cursor without a second click, which is faster. Most experienced players use it for most spells and keep normal Cast for a few that need careful aiming.
